Staverton Thicks – Part of the landscape workshop – Sunday 25th April 2021 9am – midday

Adventures in seeing and connecting with the landscape. The aim of the course is to improve your photography skills whilst developing an understanding and connection with the landscape. You will be encouraged to move away from the pre planned classic view and focus more on observation and forging a connection with the landscape around you.

Discover the magical fairytale woodland of Staverton Thicks. It’s ancient woodland is a landscape of fairytale qualities where vast oaks stand side by side with some of the tallest holly trees in Britain. Reminiscent of childhood stories, the ‘Thicks’ is a chaotic tangle of twisted branches where light is sparse and evergreen curtains of holly hang in the air. Dead and decaying boughs and trunks litter the floor and even on the brightest of days the air is cool and the forest dark. This is one of my favourite areas of woodland in Suffolk but it is also a very chaotic place that can be difficult to photograph. However when you get your eye in it is fantastically rewarding and an enchanting place to explore.

This 3 hour workshop will look at a more mindful approach to photography. You will be given a number of exercises to work on which will look at how we see the world around us. We will explore the process of taking images looking at planned images versus a more contemplative approach. We will explore different ways of ‘seeing’ the landscape and how to portray the essence of a place through our images.

This workshop is part of a new workshop / self study course which looks at a more immersive form of landscape photography. Alongside the 3 hour group session each participant will receive a free workbook which can be used afterwards to continue exploring the Suffolk landscape. The workbook features a series of exercises designed to promote a more thoughtful approach to landscape photography and explores how we can use this to engage more fully with the natural world.

Part of the landscape workshops are all slightly different and explore some of Suffolks most varied habitats many of which are often overlooked photographically. You are welcome to sign up to more than one session as each is designed to explore a different habitat.

Photographic workshops make ideal gifts. If you would like to purchase a workshop as a gift please contact me and I will send you a free gift card with your order.

All my workshops explore areas that are covered in my book Photographing the Suffolk Coast
