Autumn on the Suffolk Coast – 4 night photography workshop

What’s Included:
4 nights accommodation at Molletts Farm which is situated in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), just outside of Saxmundham. The six self catering units are all appointed to a very high standard and all have their own kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and lounge. There are no shared facilities.
4 days photography tuition
Loan of filter kits if required
Some transport between locations.
Basic quantities of tea, coffee, sugar, milk, cereal, bread, butter and jam are all provided in your accommodation should you need it.

Meals – Breakfast / lunch and dinner will be scheduled in to the itinerary each day and will be in various locations depending upon our photography schedule. We will eat together every day but the cost is not included in the price.

Description:
A fantastic opportunity to explore some lesser known locations along the Suffolk Coast, along with all the iconic landscapes that make Suffolk such a beautiful location to photograph. This area is at its most beautiful in the spring and the workshop will make the most of some of the regions best wild landscapes.
The Suffolk Coast sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which stretches from Felixstowe in the south to Lowestoft in the north. It is a fantastic and diverse habitat for photography and we will be exploring many different landscapes during the workshop.
The area is well known for its seaside towns including Southwold, Aldeburgh and Felixstowe. The coast is also divided by 5 different rivers which are home to some beautiful saltmarsh and mudflat habitats. During the workshop we will be visiting the following locations:
Aldeburgh – a traditional seaside town well known for its Scallop Shell sculpture designed by Maggi Hamblin. It has a beautiful beach scattered with old wooden boats and summer flowers, a Martello tower and a vibrant sailing scene on the River Aldeburgh.
Bawdsey – a pretty village which lies at the mouth of the River Deben with good views across the river to Felixstowe Ferry. The beach is backed by the impressive architecture of Bawdsey manor and is covered in sea kale in the early summer. Further inland you will find gun towers, pill boxes and another Martello tower and a beautiful beach great for a sunrise.
Felixstowe – a seaside town with plenty of variety. From the bustle of Felixstowe Docks to the more traditional fishing hamlet of Felixstowe Ferry this location has plenty to offer the photographer – including the strange breakwater at Cobbold Point which is perfect for long exposure photography.
Pin Mill – a busy hamlet on the banks of the River Orwell with an historic boatyard and connections to children author Arthur Ransome. Its probably best known photographically for its collection of boat wrecks which have become a focus for photographers.
Ramsholt – one of my favourite locations on the River Deben this little hamlet offers some lovely river views and a beautiful round tower church with a lovely wild flower churchyard sitting on a hill above the river.
Shingle Street – one of my favourite beaches on the Suffolk Coast this location offers some lovely seascape photography and a beach that is one of the best examples of vegetate shingle in Suffolk.
Sizewell – home to Suffolk’s nuclear power plant but a beautiful wild beach with some fishing boats and cooling towers offshore perfect for long exposure photography. This location offers good contrasts between the natural world and man made elements.
Snape and Iken – situated on the River Aldeburgh these locations are joined by a lovely riverside path. The landscape here is full of reeds, lone dead trees and beautiful areas of salt marsh. Snape is famous for its maltings and connections to Benjamin Britton and Iken has a lovely old church overlooking the river. It is also one of the most peaceful riverside locations in Suffolk where the calls of curlew are guaranteed to accompany your photography.
Southwold – one of Suffolk’s best know locations famous for its pier and colourful beach huts.
Staverton Thicks – an area of ancient oak woodland and the subject of my photography project Rooted. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore a really unusual habitat.
Walberswick – located opposite Southwold on the shores of the River Blyth. This seaside village has a bustling river front and a beautiful beach backed by sand dunes.
Woodbridge – situated at the head of the River Deben Woodbridge is a delightful small town with a history of boat building, a vibrant waterfront and an iconic Tidemill.
There may be time to take in some other locations and the itinerary will remain flexible and dependant on the weather conditions.
Why choose this workshop?
I have lived in Suffolk since 2007 and have been photographing its landscapes for most of that time. I have lived in numerous locations along the coast from Ramsholt to Hollesley and have an intimate knowledge of the landscape, its wildlife and habitats.
My workshops are designed to help you connect with the area you are photographing as I believe this will result in better more emotive images. You will come away with a good knowledge and appreciation of the Suffolk landscape as well as a set of images from a diverse range of locations.
We will cover many aspects of photography including composition and seeing an image, seascapes and long exposures, use of filters, working with the light, woodland photography and intimate landscapes. We will also have the opportunity for a post processing session using Lightroom which will take place in my studio at Hollesley.
Workshop duration
We will meet at Molletts farm at 4pm on Monday 7th October 2023 and the workshop will end at midday on Friday 11th October. We will have a photography session for sunset on the Monday, 3 full days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and the workshop will finish on Friday at Midday.
Accommodation
We will be occupying 6 self catering units in Molletts farm. Each workshop participant will have their own unit with their own facilities. For more information and pictures please see their website
Suitability
This workshop is suitable for all no matter what level you are at photographically or what camera you use. The aim is to get to know a beautiful location with a group of like minded individuals. The workshop is limited to a maximum of 6 participants. We will cover a range of photographic techniques and will be taking in some diverse locations giving a stimulating few days whatever your ability.
What to bring
You will need your camera, a selection of lenses preferably a wide angle and a telephoto, a tripod, memory cards and space batteries. If you have filters please bring them. If you don’t you are welcome to borrow some for the duration of the workshop. It will also be advantageous to bring a laptop if you have one. This will allow you to take advantage of some post processing tuition. Post processing tuition will take place at my studio in Hollesley where I have 2 Macs for your use but if you have your own laptop it would be useful to bring it.
You will also need some good outdoor clothing, a waterproof coat and some walking boots and wellies for some of the beach work.
