Spring Woodland and Creative Flower Workshop
Saturday 11th May 2023 6am – 9am. 5 places available.
Plus an included but optional 1.5 hour Zoom session to discuss images and post processing. The Zoom session will take place on Thursday 16th May at 7pm.
This woodland workshop takes place in Captains Wood, Sudbourne and is timed to coincide with the bluebell display. We will be starting an hour after sunrise which should give us nice soft light and maybe some dew on the flowers which is always nice to work with.
Captains Wood is an ancient woodland full of rare plants. It has a superb mix of natural habitats supporting a wide range of wildlife, including fallow deer, barn owl and bats. There are some lovely areas of silver birch and coppiced hazel trees as well as a small pond which adds an extra dimension to the woodland scene. Captains Wood is most renowned for its fantastic display of bluebells in May which provide plenty of colourful photographic opportunities.
The outdoor part of the workshop will will be split into two sections. The first will focus on general woodland photography using the trees and the carpet of bluebells. We will think about composition and how to get the best from a chaotic environment using structure, form and light. The second part of the workshop will look at some creative flower photography getting up close with the bluebells and stichwort. We will look at depth of field, practice shooting through elements to create blocks of colour and dreamy images with lots of bokeh.
We will cover:
Composition and seeing an image in a woodland setting, techniques for creative close up work and post processing techniques for woodland images.

A full set of course notes sent via email before the workshop.
3 hours of tuition in Captains Wood plus an included (but optional) 1 hour long zoom session afterwards on Thursday 16th May at 7pm to look at everyones best images and discuss post processing techniques. I will send out a Zoom link with your workshop notes a few days before the session.
For this workshop you will need a lens for landscapes – something in the region of 24-70mm, a macro or a telephoto lens that will allow you to get close to your flower subjects and a tripod.
